Bursaries and Scholarships

The SAIEE has the following options available for suitable candidates who intend to study for a diploma or degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering at a South African tertiary institution:

The SAIEE Education and Bursary Fund

The SAIEE awards a number of bursaries each year. Monies made available from these funds are used to finance a certain number of bursaries annually, as well as funding the existing bursaries.  These bursaries are awarded subject to the general rules and conditions of the SAIEE bursary scheme. The frequency of award, and the period for which it is tenable shall be decided by the SAIEE in its absolute discretion.

1.        SAIEE Past President's Bursary Scholarship

The Past Presidents Forum of the SAIEE awards prestigious scholarships which is a premium award for under graduate study at a South African University. This scholarship will be awarded each year, depending on the availability of funds in the Purse, for a maximum of four years of study. The scholarship should cover tuition, accommodation, books and subsistence allowances. These bursaries are awarded subject to the general rules and conditions of the SAIEE President’s Scholarship program. The amount of the scholarship will be determined at the time of offering.

2.        ISH/SAIEE Post Graduate Research Scholarship

South Africa has a proud record of innovation and development in engineering. Training for leadership in research and development is largely vested in the universities. This means that, if innovation and development is to continue, South African universities must be in a position to recruit and train research leaders in our country. In turn, the presence of such leaders in the universities ensures students are taught and mentored by capable academics.

South Africa has been a significant contributor to research and development in the generation, supply and application of electrical energy. Reliability and efficiency in demanding conditions have been hallmarks of our achievements. For this tradition to continue and to ensure that we have the resources to address the significant challenges confronting the industry, investment in the development of high-level research skills is crucial.

The ISH2009 Conference, took place in Cape Town in August 2009, proved to be a significant event in High Voltage Engineering in South Africa. It provided the opportunity for participants from 47 countries to share current high voltage research findings with their peers and for local and international organisations to display their innovative products in the same field.

Using the surplus arising from ISH2009 and a contribution from the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers, the ISH2009 Steering Committee has established a scholarship in High Voltage Engineering.

The scholarship aims at supporting young researchers, aged 30 years or less, who are engaged in research as full-time students, registered for a masters or a doctoral degree.

The field of research should be High Voltage Engineering and allied fields like measurement and analysis, environmental impact etc. provided there is a clear association with high voltage equipment and installations.

Mentorship should be through a proven South African institution with suitably qualified research/academic staff. Interaction with institutions elsewhere in the world is not excluded, but leading mentorship must be in a Southern African institution.

4.2        Selection Criteria

The main criteria applicable are academic merit which should be evaluated by taking the following aspects into account:

i)          Academic achievement and results which must include the following subjects; Mathematics, Physical Science and English or Afrikaans.

ii)          Matriculation symbols to be a minimum of a “C or 60” for Mathematics and Physical Science and a “D or 50” for languages.

iii)         Application from previously disadvantaged persons with poor socio-economic backgrounds must be carefully evaluated and the demographics of South Africa taken into account.

iv)         The financial situation of the parents or guardians as well as single parents must be considered.

v)         Other extra-curricular activities.

vi)         Preference should be given to applicants who have successfully completed either the 1st, 2nd or 3rd year/semester of a degree or diploma, this should however, not preclude deserving applicants with good matriculation results.

viii)       Application from dependents of SAIEE members are to be given preference in the final selection process.

Viiii)      As far as is practical bursaries will be awarded each year to new applications in accordance with the demographics of the Engineering Fraternity in S.A.

NOTES

Students who have been awarded a bursary and successfully completed one year or semester of their studies will automatically receive a bursary for the following year until their studies have been completed.  Students, who do not pass a specific year or semester, will not receive the bursary to repeat the year or semester.  However on successful completion of the repeated year, the bursary will be re-instated on receipt of the necessary application.
